INTRAOCULAR LENSES

Intraocular lenses, known as IOLs, are essential implants for good vision after the natural lens is removed during lens or cataract surgery. While incredibly good, at present there is no IOL which gives perfect precision over all ranges of vision. Additionally, most types of lenses Dr Rylan uses come with a toric option to correct your astigmatism and give you a better quality of vision.

The lens we pick is a balance between precision and range across 3 points: Near (phone), intermediate (computer), far (driving). Some minor sacrifices need to be made either in terms of precision or range, and the team here can help you pick the option right for your lifestyle. During your consultation prior to surgery, we will discuss the lens options in detail, but a brief outline is below for you to start thinking about.

  1. Precision lenses (aka Monofocal IOL): Sets exceptional precision vision for a specific target (usually far distance, though any point can be chosen based on your needs), but likely will need some weak glasses for other distances (usually need magnifiers/computer glasses for near/intermediate work)
    1. Pros: Unrivaled precision at your selected target. No undesired halos or glare.
    2. Cons: Glasses likely required for any other range point, especially near.
    3. Example Candidates: Anyone who has highly precise visual demands such as watchmakers, pilots, surgeons, archers.
  2. Extended Vision Lenses (aka EDOF IOL): These lenses set your vision to a specific target, but stretch the precision across a bit of range. While this produces a very high quality vision, it occasionally sacrifices a minor amount of precision to gain additional range.
    1. Pros: Can offer independence from glasses for many tasks of life.
    2. Cons: Magnifiers occasionally required for smaller print. May rarely introduce undesired phenomenon such as glare or halos.
    3. Example Candidates: Anyone who wants a good range of vision but will tolerate occasional reading glasses to reduce sacrifices in vision precision.
  3. Extensive Range Lenses (aka Multifocal/Trifocal IOL): These lenses stretch the precision of vision over an extensive range to achieve good quality vision at all points.
    1. Pros: Seldomly need any sort of glasses for any task.
    2. Cons: Mild degradation in contrast and vision quality. Increased risk of introducing undesired phenomenon such as glare and halos, especially at night.
    3. Example Candidates: Usually very active people who value absolute independence from glasses and can tolerate some minor trade off. Need otherwise healthy eyes to be considered.
