👁️ GENERAL OPHTHALMOLOGY

Restore Your Vision, Regain Your Freedom

At The Vision Surgeon, general eye health is where every vision journey begins. Whether you’re experiencing blurred vision, difficulty driving at night, or changes in your prescription, these symptoms may point to underlying issues such as cataracts, presbyopia, refractive errors, or macular conditions.

Many patients discover they’re excellent candidates for life-changing procedures like laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK) or cataract surgery with precision or premium intraocular lenses—but it all starts with a thorough specialist assessment.

✅ Common Conditions We Assess:

  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • Difficulty reading or using digital devices
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Age-related vision changes (presbyopia or cataracts)
  • Increasing dependence on glasses or contact lenses

While not every condition can be fully reversed, many have excellent treatment options—often involving advanced eye surgery to restore clarity and reduce dependence on glasses.

Expert Surgical Care for Your Health

🚫 Conditions We Do Not Routinely Treat

While Dr Rylan Hayes – The Vision Surgeon is highly specialised in cataract and refractive (laser vision) surgery, there are certain subspecialty areas of ophthalmology that fall outside the scope of our routine practice. If your condition falls into one of the categories below, we recommend seeking care with the appropriate subspecialist or optometrist:

🧠 Neuro-Ophthalmology

  • Conditions involving the brain, nerves, optic nerve or brain-vision pathway, including:
    • Visual field defects not associated with glaucoma
    • Double vision of neurological origin
    • Unexplained vision loss with confirmed normal eye structure
We recommend seeking care from a dedicated neuro-ophthalmologist or neurologist for comprehensive assessment and management.

👀 Strabismus and Eye Alignment Issues

  • Misaligned eyes or squint in adults and children
  • Double vision from muscle imbalance
  • Prism assessments for diplopia
These require assessment by a strabismus or paediatric ophthalmologist.

👁️ Oculoplastics (Eyelid and Orbit Surgery)

  • Droopy eyelids (ptosis)
  • Eyelid malpositions (entropion, ectropion)
  • Thyroid eye disease
  • Tearing disorders and blocked tear ducts
  • Complex eyelid lumps, cysts or tumours
These conditions are best addressed by an oculoplastic surgeon.

🧬 Retinal Disorders Not Related to Cataracts

  • Macular Hole
  • Epiretinal Membrane (macular pucker)
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Floaters
Although we assess the macula during cataract evaluation, these conditions typically require care from a retinal specialist.

👶 Paediatric Eye Care

  • Routine eye checks for children
  • Amblyopia (“lazy eye”)
  • Childhood strabismus or congenital eye conditions
  • Congenital cataracts in children
These are best managed by a dedicated paediatric ophthalmologist.

💧 Routine Dry Eye Disease

We do not offer management for routine or chronic dry eye as a standalone condition.
Dry eye therapy often requires specialised diagnostic equipment and targeted treatments such as:

  • Meibomian gland imaging
  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy
  • BlephEx or LipiFlow procedures

We recommend visiting a specialised dry eye optometrist near you who is equipped to provide this level of care. If you’re unsure where to go, our team can suggest a trusted provider in your local area.

Multiple Conditions?

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation, our friendly and experienced team is here to help. We’ll guide you through your options and determine whether cataract or laser vision correction is right for your needs.

In many cases, cataracts may coexist with other eye conditions, such as dry eye, macular changes, or eyelid issues. While we can assist with many of these concerns as part of your surgical journey, you may be referred to a trusted subspecialist for comprehensive management of any additional findings — ensuring you receive the most appropriate and expert care at every step.
