Lens replacement surgery can be performed with or without a cataract developed. If you have made an appointment to see Dr Rylan for refractive lens exchange or cataract surgery, or are considering making one, congratulations. This procedure to replace it with a premium artificial lens truly is a favourite form of vision surgery.
Complex equipment allows Dr Rylan to offer this life changing operation to you. Combined with his extensive training in modern techniques, most cataract surgeries can be completed in under 10 minutes. And, where appropriate, the operation may be performed through a single microscopic incision into the eye. To facilitate this, you are usually given twilight sedation and your eye is made numb with drops or a small injection. The surgery removes the natural lens/cataract and implants an artificial lens. Then you can wake up, have a drink and snack, and can go home the very same day.
Once your natural lens/cataract is removed, a custom chosen artificial lens is implanted into your eye. This lens can correct your glasses prescription and usually any astigmatism you have. It is specifically calculated and chosen to minimise your glasses requirement after the operation, but there are some important considerations, with each option having some trade off.
There is no perfect artificial lens (yet). The lens we pick is a balance between precision and range across 3 points:
Near (phone), intermediate (computer), far (driving).
Unfortunately at present there is no lens in the world which gives perfect precision over all ranges of vision. Some minor sacrifices need to be made either in terms of precision or range, and the team here can help you pick the option right for your lifestyle. During your consultation prior to surgery, we will discuss the lens options in detail, but a brief outline is below for you to start thinking about.
