If you or any family members have glaucoma it is important to get regular eye tests with your optometrist. Glaucoma slowly damages the edges of vision and people may not notice damage until it is significantly advanced - and we cannot reverse the damage at all. To try and stop glaucoma from damaging the vision, the pressure inside the eye (Intraocular Pressure - IOP) is usually lowered.
By using drops, laser, and/or surgery, Dr Rylan can help you find the best option to manage your glaucoma in line with your lifestyle and keep your precious vision intact.
If you have glaucoma and have never had cataract surgery, this is often an excellent option for most people (though not everyone) to improve both your vision and help control your glaucoma. You can read more about cataract surgery and lens implantation on our information page, just be aware glaucoma may limit the type of lenses which can be safely used.
Dr Rylan can assess your suitability and discuss the best option for your condition. Furthermore, cataract surgery can often be combined with MIGS (see over) to get even better control of your glaucoma.
Dr Rylan has a special qualification and training for implanting these small metal devices in the eye. They can help improve IOP, reduce glaucoma progress, and sometimes let people stop their glaucoma drops altogether. These devices are made of similar metal to stents used in the heart, and you will never feel, see, or notice it inside your eye.
The stent can be implanted in a standalone operation but preference is to usually combine their implantation with cataract surgery for maximum efficiency and benefit.
There are a few different types of laser used for glaucoma to try and lower the IOP, and during an appointment you can be assessed for which is most likely to benefit you. Sometimes the laser is very effective with excellent pressure lowering, whereas other people have a more modest response and may still needs drops or surgery afterwards. Even if you have had laser before, Dr Rylan can probably repeat it with our highly efficient modern equipment to further improve your glaucoma control.
Eyedrops are often very effective at improving pressure for glaucoma, but they can be bothersome. Redness, irritation, blur, or just forgetting them, can all affect performance. If eyedrops aren’t a problem for you that is fantastic! But if you are suffering from the side effects of drops, there might be alternate options to reduce or change your drops and improve your quality of life.
These include trabeculectomy and tube implants, and are bigger glaucoma operations usually reserved for when other methods are inadequate. Although they do carry higher risks than other options for glaucoma, they are usually incredibly effective at achieving good control of glaucoma when necessary. Dr Rylan uses some of the most advanced equipment and techniques to reduce risks and improve success.
